Maureen O'hara..........................From her first appearances on the stage and screen Maureen O'Hara (b. 1920) attracted attention for her beautiful beauty and sparkling red hair, and her passionate portrayals of spirited heroines. The story of how she was rescued from the gallows of Charles Laughton's film The Hunchback (released in 1939), in love and discovering miracles the likes of Natalie Wood on 34th Street (1947) or even rubbing shoulders with John Wayne on The Quiet Man in 1952, she delighted audiences with her confident presence. Maureen O'Hara: The Queen of Technicolor is the only full-length biography of this screen legend. Following the star from her youth in Dublin up to her apex of fame in Hollywood the film critic Aubrey Malone draws on new data from the Irish Film Institute production notes of films, as well as information from historical film journals newspapers and fan magazines. Malone also examines the actress's friendship with frequent costar John Wayne and her relationship with director John Ford and he addresses the hotly debated question of whether or not the screen diva was a feminist or antifeminist figure. She is one of the most elusive characters and a mystery despite being among the most celebrated celebrities of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The fact that she was able to hide her personal life private while making public statements which contradicted individual choices have made her an enigma. This is the first biography that reveals the person that was the real woman behind her larger than life image This book debunks the legends and offers a fair evaluation of one of the more well-known stars of cinema.
